Meta Descriptions

The Key For Both High Listings and Pulling People to Your Website

The meta tags for "keywords" and "description" are the two keys to improve your placement or position in most of the search engines. They are not keys on all the search engines, two exceptions being the Excite and Open Text. Matching the words in the users query to words in the title and meta keywords and meta description tags is how most of the major search engines determine placement or ranking of the results. Using the right words in these three areas along with repeating them in the text on the page will get you a high ranking.

The trick is to choose the correct keywords. You musty select keywords that will be used often for a query for a product/service or topic and repeating the keywords several times in the text on the page results in higher position. A sneaky way to get more of the best of your t keywords in your document is to use utilize the "alt" for all your images.

It would look like this: ALT="[Keyword]"

Start your keyword selection by making a list of any words you can think of. Next, ask a friend, colleague or a client familiar with the topic for the words they would use. Write down the new ones they give you and if they repeat a word or phrase you thought of make a note of that. Lastly, ask someone who hasn't got a clue about the topic.

Then put a value on the words and phrases. Keep in mind you have limits to the amount of characters you can use in both your keyword and description meta tags. Use 900 characters for the keywords and no more then 180 for the description. The known limit is 1024 but start with 900 because each search engine has different limits and 900 works on all of them. Otherwise you will have to write separate tags for each engine. For descriptions keeping it to 180 characters will cover all engines as well.

Now you're ready to start writing your title out of the keyword phrases for the highest possible listing. Remember, ALWAYS PUT THE BEST KEYWORDS IN THE URL SOURCE TITLE

The order of importance of keywords is always the title, the beginning of the document , meta descriptions and meta tags.

Do Not Forget!

Following the advise I have provided and you will get you listed high. I know because I do it all the time. Not every time, though. Usually about half the time. The first time you get listed in a major search engine will be an unforgettable moment. I certainly remembers my first time. It was Alta Vista, page 1, #2. It was exciting. And It will be for you too.

Good Luck
