Old Search Engine Secrets

In the olds days (1999!), submission was a numbers game. The more sites you could properly submit to, The more traffic you'd get. But as the Internet matures, things change.

New Search Engine Secrets

There really aren't any new search engine secrets, only changes. The biggest difference these days is that it costs to get a listing in the major indexes (Yahoo & Open Directory), and the search engines are also getting into the act -- Inktomi, Altavista and Mamma now have a paid-submission option, and the other major search engines are all considering following along.

There has been a huge debate or whether the "death of free submission," is a good thing or not. Personally, I think it is a good thing. Why?

With the number of webpages is growing rapidly, is becomes harder and harder for people to find your website in the sea of millions of similar websites.

When people want to find a website, they typically go to one of the major indexes or search engines. Now ask yourself, would you like to search to list over 1,000,000,000 websites (submitted for free), or 1000 websites (each of which has paid $199 to get listed)? Obviously, the latter!

So, if you are serious about doing business on the web, then paid submissions are a good thing. Start looking at web submission as an economics issue: Is it cost effective to pay the cash to submit to Yahoo, Inktomi, Open Directory, etc. In other worlds, can you make a profit?

Is the $299 paid out to MAYBE get listed in Yahoo better spent using Pay for Click search engines, such as Overture or Find What; Will the $39.00 spend to get one page listed in Inktomi, plus ($25.00 for every page thereafter) get me a return. Or will submitting free to Google, Alta Vista, DMOZ and other free search engines generate the traffic needed.

In this chaos of changes, how do you know what to do?

It's really not that difficult. In fact, nothing really has changed except that is is even MORE important to choose your optimization strategy wisely. Pay very close attention to keyword balance, the page title, meta tags, and especially the content of your webpages.

I us all three methods - free submission, paid inclusion and pay for clicks. I get the majority of my traffic from Yahoo, Google, AOL and MSN (via Inktomi). I use a combination of paid inclusion and free submission to to generate most of my traffic. I have found that by getting several relevant links listed through paid Inktomi, I can post many more using free Inktomi . My advise is to get an Inktomi account, get listed in DMOZ, and use Google as your primary free search engine. I only use Pay For Clicks if I can get a conversion rate that makes a profit, and that means doing a daily analysis.

One other note in posting. I go to each search engine or directory to post new links. I also use Self Promote to promote to a larger group of search engines. Using Self Promote, I can schedule monthly resubmissions. Other benefits include a form to see if your website is listed in the major search engines and directories (mine are), a multi submit page, search term generator, lots of helpful articles and a FREE trial period. Well worth your time. I learned a lot here, and while it is not my primary submission tool (I use submission software designed for my Mac), I still pay my $10 a year for the services, and consider it well spent.

If you are serious about website promoting (as I am) you should consider buying submission software (which I have). If you use a PC, I highly recommond SubmitWolfPro. Click HERE to download a free trial. If you use a Mac, I recommend VSE Be Found. I use both and find them very helpful in getting my listing on page one of the major search engines and indexes. I have tried most of the other submission software and found them no up to the standards I want.

Don't try to spam the indexes. Don't use stealth techniques, don't play the doorway game, hidden text or any other of the new tricks that always appear. If the search engines don't know the trick yet, they will soon and they are blacklisting those who they catch

Listen to what search engines are trying to tell you. By knowing what factors search engines use to rank your pages, you can focus your efforts and achieve top rankings without resorting to spam. Go to Quick Summery for a quick overview of what the search engines want.
