a Website

Keyword
Selection

- Keyword Selection
-
- Keyword is a word or words
that people use in a search to find a website. As a
website designer, you must select those words that you
think people will use to find your website. It is not
that easy. If the best word that describes your website
or opportunity is really obvious, then EVERYONE will be
using it and it will be next to impossible to keep a high
listing even if you managed a high listing.
-
- What you must do is to use that
obvious keyword with other words that people may use so
that a search for that combination will show up. What you
are trying to do is use combinations that are unique unto
themselves. MOST web designers spend a lot of time trying
to get listed with the one or two most obviously AND
powerful keywords and ignore secondary
combinations.
-
- For example, if your website was
about travel, the most obvious keyword is travel or
traveling. If you use travel in a search, you will find
millions of web sites. That word is not only overused, it
is bought and paid for in some search engines, so the
chances of high listings with the single word travel are
nonexistent.
-
- Now try a combination of words
with travel. World Wide Traveling, International
Traveling, travel information, travel tips, travel help,
England Travel, Switzerland Travel Guide.
-
- Do search of these and you will
find far fewer websites and will be able to write a
website that CAN be placed in the top ten with one or
more of those combinations.
-
- One service I have found
invaluable in Keyword
Tracker. They
have simplified this process. You can run use a single
keyword phrase and they will run comparisons on the major
search engines saying how many hits that keyword or
keyword phrases get, how many sites use it and give you a
list of similar phrases with the same info. Really a time
save.
-
- These keywords MUST ALWAYS BE
PLACED IN YOUR TITLE in addition to the body of you
text.
-
- The first paragraph in your
submitted page must be loaded with the primary keywords
you select. Here is what you need to do.
-
- Building
Keywords
-
- List your keywords and keyword
phrases, one on each line. Once you have a list,
rearrange them in order of priority, the most important
ones at the top. Find synonyms of the Best of your list.
Do searches on each and see how many websites use the
same keywords or keyword phrases. Keep track of which
ones draw the most traffic for your, and, more
importantly, which one has the BEST CONVERSION RATE of
visitor to buyer.
-
The Strategy: Targeted vs.
General
-
- In the past, I have gotten single
pages listed with keywords that resulted in hundreds of
hits a day. When I did an analysis on the sells created
by those hits, I was astounded to discover that pages
that were getting as little as 20 hits a day were
outperforming those getting hundreds. Why?
-
- The answer is very simple. The
high volume of traffic I was receiving was "General
Traffic", not Specific or "Targeted" traffic. It goes
like this:
-
- Say I was advertising vacations to
Hawaii and I got a page listed #1 in Google and Yahoo
under the single keyword of travel. I would get hundreds,
maybe thousands of people visiting my pages, but MOST
would NOT BE looking for Hawaii Vacations, but for other
destinations or information. So for every 1,000 people
that visited, may 4 or 5 would be looking for a Hawaii
vacation, and even at that they may not be serious about
joing to Hawaii.
-
- Now if I had the same page listed
under Hawaii Vacations, I would maybe only get 100 visits
a day, but they cam to my web page LOOKING for Hawaii
Vacations, and my ratio of visitors to clients goes up to
10 per 100.
-
- The Lesson: Keep your keywords
relevant to what you are selling, and keep track of those
that result in the BEST conversion rate.
-
- Think Like a
Customer
-
- Imagine that you're one of the
people who's looking for your type of product. How would
they most likely look for your product? By entering a
string of words into a form, and if so so, what would it
be? The most obvious words are the ones you want to use.
If it is one or two words, then you had better cover
those words as every way you can.
-
- Plurals
-
- When you've completed your
keywords list, add the letter 's' to the end of every
word (or add the plural). Some search engines distinguish
between the singular word and other don't. If a person
searches for on 'games' and if your keywords are in the
singular your page won't be listed and your efforts will
have been wasted, whereas your page will be listed in a
search for the singular. A search for 'hotel' will find
your keyword 'hotels' for example.
-
- Misspellings
-
- If any of your keywords are
routinely misspelled, include the incorrect version in
your keyword list. If you're selling satellite TV dishes,
include 'satellite' on your list, loto instead of lotto,
supper instead of super....and so on.
-
- Keyword Phrases
-
- These days there are so many pages
on the Web that users usually search for 'strings' of at
least two or three related words at once, for example
"California red wine". Now, if you have all three words
on your list separately, you'll be listed below somebody
else's page if they've targeted all three words together,
in a Keyword Phrase.

- Test Your
Keywords
-
- Now keep your list handy, visit
all the major search engines and enter your keywords one
by one to see what comes up in the search results list.
Study a few of the top pages which will have a similar
topic to yours, and see if there are any other good
keywords you could add to your list which you hadn't
thought of before.
-
- Mirror Sites NO - Multiple
Websites -YES
-
- Once a viable technique. Now one
must be very sophisticated in their approach. Since link
popularity and relevancy are important, a simple mirror
site will not do. Multiple website will, though. Create a
network of website and link them together. Keep relevant
content on them. You really do not need to sell something
on every site, (I wouldn't hurt, though would it?), you
just need to generate traffic.
-
- One way around this is to utilize
the free web hosting services to host your network of web
sites. I have them listed on my ALL
FREE section of this
website.
